We have had our first Team Info Meeting and our next meeting will be Oct 22nd at 6:30pm at my home (email me for directions - seekhispeace@gmail.com). We have assigned some events, but there are several fun events still open... I put a list of the open events in the 9/23/10 post.
What is a Science Olympiad competition?
* We have a High School team and a Middle School Team.
* Each competition is on a Saturday and has up to 23 events.
* We attend 4 competitions per year January through
* Each CSI team member will participate in 2 or more events at each competition.
* Events range from: build & test/race/run... to: study and do. Check out: www.soinc.org
* Teams receive points from each event entered, based on participation.
* Teams are ranked based on total points from all events.
* Trophies, Medals, and/or Ribbons are awarded to participants for each event and then overall to teams.
What is the student’s & family’s commitment?
* families must participate in homeschooling in some way in the following counties:
- Eaton
- Ingham
- Clinton
* fundraise or pay the $95 per student participation costs;
* pay for any supplies or expenses for their assigned events (varies from ZERO to $50+); and
* attend all Team Meetings and Competitions (or at least most).
How do team members prepare?
Most events will have 2 or more students working together to study and/or build something. Event costs will not be reimbursed and are the responsibility of the student's family. Some events have little to no expenses, but some events (especially Build-Its) can coast the family $50 or more to complete successfully. In Build-It events students find information and materials to construct an item. In Study-It events the student studies and practices for their event. Combo Events are events that have some prior building or practicing, but the main part is performed at the competition.
If you would like to join this year, have your student rank the available events in order of preference (1 being the most preferred) and email the list to me ( seekhispeace@gmail.com) and we can work on placing them on the team.
Finances...
There is a cost of $95 per student to be on the CSI Team. The amount is split into 3 payments.
$45/October meeting, $25/November meeting and $25/December meeting.
After we receive the parent forms and first payment your student will receive their event assignments and rule book.
We encourage you to fund raise for your CSI membership fees. I can email a sponsorship form to print out for anyone interested in fundraising ( seekhispeace@gmail.com). Some sponsorship ideas include:
