Calendar Updates...

We are canceling the meeting for this week.  Too many people have conflicts, including my family.  Our next Team Meeting is Thursday, October 24th @ 4pm @ the Wagenmaker's Home.

The Regional date has been set for Saturday, March 15th, 2014.  It will be at Lansing Community College (as it always has been).  I have updated calendar on the blog.

Contact your event partner(s) and get with them if possible over the next two weeks
(either, by phone or in person).  Splitting up the events between event partners should be done before the next meeting.  I want to see highlighted rule books showing who is covering what (if you have an event partner). If that makes no sense to you, that is okay... just ask someone (even me if necessary).

We still have spots on both teams... so if you want to build friendships, have fun, and learn something new.... contact me!

Thanks.....

Info Meeting and more....

We had an Information Meeting on Thursday, August 28th.

This first meeting of the school year was geared toward new people who indicated an interest in CSI.  You did not have to attend the meeting to be a part of the team.

We are planning on having the first official Team Meeting on Thursday, September 19th at 7 PM.  Email Coach Parker for directions to the meeting.

Students interested in the team should review the event list by 9/9/13 (or as soon as they can) and email their preferences to Coach Parker.  Basically, they should copy and paste the list from the event tab into an email and indicate one of the following for each event at their level:
Yay!
Yes
Maybe
No
Yuck!

At this first meeting, we'd like to give the kids their 1st event assignment so they can get started.

High School Credit?
* Each family handles this differently - guideline 1/4 - 1/2 credit for each event studied.

Ages for CSI teams?
* Ages/grades are broken into these groups: (8th and 9th graders can choose HS or MS)
9th to 12th graders are are Level C  =  HS  =  High Schoolers
6th to 9th graders are are Level B  =  MS  =  Middle Schoolers

What is a Science Olympiad competition?
* Each competition is one day with up to 23 events.
* Each CSI team member will participate in 3 to 4 events at each competition.
* Events range from build & test/race/run... to study and do.  Check out: www.soinc.org
* Teams receive points from each event entered, based on participation.
* Teams are ranked based on total points from all events.

What is the student’s commitment?

prepare and study for a minimum of 3 events per student;
compete in 4 Saturday tournaments;
* fundraise or pay the $95 per student participation costs ($20 up front)
* attend bi-weekly Team Meetings held on Thursday afternoons (contact us about conflicts);
help get sponsors to keep financial burdens to a minimum (not required, but helpful); and
help find Event Coaches (not required, but the more Event Coaches we have, the better the team).
How do team members prepare?
    Each event will have 2 or more students working together to study and/or build something.  Budgeted event costs will be reimbursed with a receipt.  Anything over the budgeted amount is the responsibility of the family that purchased it.
    In Build-It events students find information and materials, with mentoring from their Event Coach, to construct an item.
    In Study-It events the student, with mentoring from their Event Coach, studies and practices for their event.
    Combo Events are events that have some prior building or practicing, but the main part is performed at the competition.
